REPORT OF VISIT OF NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF YHAI, DR. HARISH K. SAXENA TO KERALA

Purpose of Visit
Dr. Saxena has received an invitation from the Kerala State Branch for participating in the commemoration programme of Shri Madhavan Pottekkat, who was former Secretary of the Kerala State Branch and had worked immensely for spreading the Youth Hostelling Movement (YHM) in Kerala. Dr. Harish K. Saxena was declared the State Guest of Government of Kerala before his visit. The Director, Deptt. of Tourism had made all his transportation, accommodation and other facilities arrangements.

Another purpose of the visit was to promote Peace and International Understanding and youth tourism in the country. The focus of the meeting was to create mutual synergies and bonhomie among the youth of the State especially the youth who constitute the largest chunk of the population. For this purpose, dialogue, discussion and exchange of views were arranged making it possible to adopt the best practices for YH prevalent within and outside Kerala.

Dr Saxena reached Ernakulum on 11th January, 2012. He attended the function on 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda –National Youth Day on 12th Jan 2012 and addressed a large gathering of youth. The other dignitaries present during the Seminar were Two MLAs and Dy. Mayor, Ernakulum. He further integrated with a gathering of about 300 students who were brimming with youth energy and enthusiasm. The meeting was followed by Adventure Mela in which the students participated in adventure activities like, Rope Climbing, Burma Bridges, Flying fox and Rappling etc.

On 13th January, 2012, Dr. Saxena visited Kollam. He attended Madhavan Pottekkat Commemoration Programme at Sopanam Auditorium-Public Library, Kollam. He paid tributes to Shri Madhavan Pottekkat who was former Secretary of the Kerala State Branch, YHAI. He further said that Shri Madhavan explored the YH movement in Kerala and served the purpose immensely. This was followed by a Seminar about Food Safety. A former Minister presided over the function. The entire seminar was conducted in Malayalam. Dr. Saxena gave his point of view.

Keep Kerala Beaches Clean
During his visit to Kollam, he noted that though Kerala is very famous as a tourist place and called Gods own country but due care has not been given to the surrounding environment. He opined that cleanliness of a tourist place is very important. During his visit to Kerala, he noted that Kerala State Branch has very strong grassroots presence and the Units are organizing many activities and decided to work with them for the benefit of Kerala tourism. Understanding the importance of tourism in the revenue generation for the locals and to keep fragile environment stable, Dr. Saxena, National President, YHAI announced to organize “Keep Kerala Beaches Clean” programme for three continuous years on the lines of “Keep Rohtang Pass Clean” programme that was conducted and self-funded by YHAI in Himachal Pradesh. A large Press Conference was organized. He informed the members that YHAI organized “Keep Rohtang Pass Clean” programme in the Kullu-Manali area of Himachal Pradesh continuous for three years from 2009 to 2011. He further apprised that YHAI was organizing “Keep Rohtang Pass Clean” programme on our own funds and not taking any assistance from state and central government to sensitize participants, locals and tourists about the importance of environment protection to preserve the pristine beauty of nature for future generations. YHAI also conducted “Keep Dal Lake Clean” programme in 2009.

Dr. Saxena announced a donation of Rs.1 lac to the Kerala State Branch for the promotion of adventure activities and asked them to submit a proposal for the same.

Shri P.K. Vidhyadharan, Chairman and Shri J. Shine, Secretary, Kerala State Branch, YHAI accompanied Dr. Saxena on 13th Jan., 2012 to Varkala. Here, on 14th Jan., 2012, he met the Unit Executive members and also the Press persons. Thereafter, he proceeded to Thiruvananthapuram where a big function was arranged to inaugurate the Thiruvananthapuram Adhoc Unit. Shri Shashi Tharur, Member of Parliament from the city and Shri Ravi, MLA and a large number of other dignitaries were present. They appreciated the efforts of YHAI for the promoting adventure activities, national integration and peace and understanding between the youth of the country. They also thanked Dr. Saxena for announcing special programme “Keep Kerala Beaches Clean” programme and boosting the image of the Kerala.

The Press and local T.V. gave wide publicity to YHAI activities in Ernakulam, Kollam, Verkala and Thiruvananthapuram.

On 15th January, 2012, he returned Delhi from Thiruvananthapuram.

• The Program Director is responsible for organizing, planning, and implementing the day-to-day program of the Camp, working with the Field Director, Camp Leaders, supervise program instructors and other staff
• Coordinate and oversee all aspects of camp, including staff, campers, activities, administrative duties, and special programming
• Must have prior camp leadership experience, and demonstrate supervisory and leadership abilities
• Ensure the safety and security of participants, volunteers and staff. Ladies come from all over the India are participants in different capacities in the program
• Should visualize, plan and implement new/ revamp programs keeping view of the increased expenditure to re-assess the participant fee
• He is also responsible for the financial administration of the programmes

PRESS RELEASE – Triennial Elections of Youth Hostels Association of India

Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI) is pleased to inform that it had Triennial Election of National Council on 4th December, 2011. Dr. Harish K. Saxena relinquished the post of National Chairman after serving for 26 years in the same position. He was the only National Office Bearer since the inception of the movement in India in 1949 who served as the National Chairman’s for such a long term. Under his leadership, movement was flourished not only at urban areas but at the rural areas also. Dr Saxena is the first non-European to serve as President, International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF), U.K. for a record 8 years continuously.

The incumbent team and the newly elected of National Office Bearer is as follows –
